Deep into the Moka Golf Course in Maraval, perfectly secluded on the foot of the hills of Paramin where the sight of the hills leading to the North Coast Road that takes you to Maracas Bay is nothing but magical. (10) MOUNT SAINT BENEDICT.

Up in the hills of St. Augustine, Eastern Trinidad, roughly 600 feet above sea level lies the oldest Abbey in the West Indies. Erected in 1911 by a Brazilian Monk who escaped from his homeland because of religious persecution. Today, the Abbey opens her arms to everybody wishing to visit.

Duration of tour: 4 hours.

(11) THE HEIGHTS OF PARAMIN EXPERIENCE.

Come and take the journey up very steep hills where 75% of the vehicles of the village of Paramin are 4 wheelers. Quite an historic village where descendants of Spanish and French heritage still live together. Patois (Creole French) is still spoken by the older folks as well as Spanish. Come visit and experience the simple life of the Paraminians:

History of Maraval.

History of Paramin as we drive on uphill.

A drive through a small village of Paragran, east of Paramin village. Nature at its glorious best.

Completion at the North Coast Road.

Duration of tour: 4 hours.

(12) MARIANNE WATERFALL HIKE.

One of the most versatile treks to any waterfall in Trinidad and Tobago. Unarguably the gem of all natural waterfalls in our twin island, neatly situated in the forest in Blanchisseuse. There are (4) ways in getting to this wonderful waterfall, and what I mean here is that this trek caters for the fit, the not so fit and the not fit at all. These treks are tailored made for all.

 (a) FROM THE SPRING BRIDGE THROUGH THE FOREST.

This trek, we will be taking the wonderful forest to the fall, and this trek will take for the most 1 hour 30 minutes to reach the falls; but believe it or not, every trek here is surely worth it.

(b) FROM THE SPRING BRIDGE UPSTREAM TO THE FALLS.

This is a water trek where from the Spring Bridge, we will be trekking a bit up to the popular (3) pools, and it is from here the adventure begins. An invigorating hour and 15 minutes through great natural pools and small gorges await our arrival.

(c) AVOCAR VILLAGE THROUGH THE RIVER.

This hike is designed for the unfit and the not so fit. We head on to a tiny village on the Arima/Blanchisseuse Road, and from here, we park our vehicle at Marian’s Place. From here on, we take the clear dirt road trek to the river and when we are there, just an easy 20 minute trek downstream and you know what? We’re there at the falls.

(d) AVOCAR VILLAGE THROUGH THE FOREST.

To add that touch of being in the forest, from where we park our vehicle, a short trek on the dirt road and midway, we veer to our left up a short hill until we reach to the top, and from here on, it’s great forest walk for about 25 minutes and we’re there.

Duration of tour: 8 hours.

(13) PARIA BAY AND WATERFALLS.

A hikers paradise. An enjoyable (2hours and 30 minutes) trek on a great trail which so happens to be one of the most used trails in Trinidad and Tobago. Great views all the way to Paria which by chance is the first true coastal beach that cannot be accessed whatsoever by vehicles. A great trail, as well as a quick stop off at "Turtle Rock" that affords great views of the Caribbean Sea. From the beach of Paria, a further (20)minute trek into the woods will lead us to the waterfall which is simply fantastic, as well as its pool. Finally, great sea bathing at the front of the Paria River that meets the sea where here also is a favourite bathing spot just as well. Great versatility for the hiker to enjoy.

One hour trek from the Spring Bridge on clear dirt road to the beginning of the forest. Caution: You will be opened to the sun, so a broad brimmed hat will certainly be an asset, as well as a generous supply of water.

Through the forest, equal bits of up hills, down hills and flat terrain to ease your trek throughout.

Great views of the sea as we trek along the trail at certain points.

A stop off at "Turtle Rock" as stated earlier. Great photo opportunities.

Finally, as we reach the beach of Paria, the great "Cathedral Rock" which is an eye fill is there to greet us.

An easy (20) minute walk further in the forest to lead us to the waterfall that is certainly an experience to remember.

The final stop off at the river that meets the sea for a swim.

Duration of tour: 10 hours.

A stop off at Maracas Bay for a bake and shark is included.

(14) RIO SECO WATERFALLS.

Another hikers favourite trek. Welcome to the North-Eastern part of Trinidad in the village of "Salybia". An easy (35) minute trek from where we park our vehicle through great "Mora Forest" where the trunk of this tree is great for furniture making. Because this is natural forest, the trail throughout is simply fantastic with the result? A simply GREAT pool and waterfall. Caution though is that this pool is not friendly to non-swimmers at all, for when you step into the pool which is just above ankle height, two more foot steps and you’re in over (6) feet of water; but feat not at all my dear non-swimmers, for safety procedures will be put in place to ensure that you will not miss out in the action whatsoever.

From the Toco Main Road, an easy drive into Rio Seco Road until we come to the end of the road; we then park.

East walking all the way until we meet a short hill which is the only obstacle for the not so fit trekkers, but in no time whatsoever, that uphill trek will be accomplished.

From the top of this hill, an absolutely fantastic view of the pool and waterfall is there for you to judge.

Life jackets, floatation devise and rope are there for your safety throughout the duration.

Duration of tour: 8 hours.

(15) TURURE WATERFALLS.

Still in the North-Eastern part of Trinidad, this time, we are in Valencia. One and a half miles from the Valencia junction we veer left into Cumaca Road where this road is quite rough, so care has to be undertaken when driving along this road. As we approach the first bridge, we park here and from there, we will enjoy an easy 35 minute trek through forest and river crossings until we come to the first of (3) waterfalls. These are falls of a difference; instead of seeing the usual body of water falling from the top, these falls are simply water cascading down large limestone rocks giving it a rippling effect that can create quite a soothing effect both mentally and physically once the group is quiet enough. The second and third pools had good pools to have a swim. Great views of the forest all around us at the falls is certainly assured.

A lovely small pool at the very start of the trek where our car is parked.

Great trail throughout with about (5) small river crossings and a short walk upstream.

The first waterfall is like a shower where one person at a time can enjoy a bath as though you’re under a shower.

The second waterfall is more attractive with a small but quite a deep pool is there for your enjoyment.

The third and most attractive of all waterfalls awaits us with a great pool for our enjoyment.

Great forest greenery all around us with the constant sounds of the chirping of the different species of birds to serenade us.

Duration of tour: 6 hours.

(16) HABIO WATERFALLS.

Welcome to "Rincon Village", situated in the North-Eastern part of the Northern Range. This village is in the valley of the second tallest mountain of Trinidad and Tobago, "El Tucuche". The flora here is absolutely rich and green all around. The trail from the start of this trek has quite a bit of up hills, so fitness here is the key. The duration of this trek one way is about 1 hour and 20 minutes along a clear trail. Lovely views in certain parts of the trail, as well as great sounds from above by the birds. Caution must be undertaken along this trail as there are a number of side trails, so staying together at all times is vitally important. As we head steeply downhill, that is the indicator that the waterfall is just around the corner. Habio waterfall is the island’s second tallest.

Uphill trek from the start until we level off after about 30 minutes.

This is a circuit hike; in other words, the trail we take to the falls, we will not be passing there on our return.

A number of clear side trails along the way; we stick to the main trail at all times.

The steep trek downhill to the falls can be quite muddy at times, so prepare yourselves.

A great falls and a big pool with shallow and deep ends. Non-swimmers have to be a bit careful at all times.

Because of the height of the falls, the constant pounding of the water into the pool create a lot of breeze, and as time goes along, the place can become quite chilly, so a light jacket can be recommended at your discretion.

Duration of tour: 8 hours.

(17) NEGMAWAH BEACH.

One of the unknown gems on the Northern Range before Maracas Bay. This once upon a time a village meaning "Nigger Run Away" by the runaway slaves during the days of slavery in Trinidad; as the younger generation of these ex-slaves became men and their parents died, they departed from this village and headed to Port of Spain. This trail is all the way downhill to a virgin beach that is nothing but superb. The trail is cleat throughout and an extra treat is that there is a smaller cove on the other side of the main bay, perfect for total rest and relaxation.
Road walking at first until we meet the trail continuing downwards.

Clear trail throughout pristine forest and the faint, yet refreshing sounds of the waves.

Upon reaching the beach, there is erosion, and so, rope has to be used to get us to the bottom of the sea shore.

When we reach at the bottom, we trek carefully over the fallen rocks until we reach to the sandy part of the beach. "WELCOME TO NEGMAWAH BAY".

Great emerald waters of this beach together with total seclusion here.

A short trek to the rock out into the sea adds to the adventure part of you.

Another short trek to the other side of Negmawah which is known as "Negmawah Cove"; ideal for rest and relaxation just hearing the gentle waves coming through the narrow passage onto the shore.

Duration of tour: 6 hours.

(18) EL TUCUCHE VIA ACONO VILLAGE.

Welcome to the village of Acono, north-east of Maracas St. Joseph where this village is quite rapidly becoming a busy place due to rapid development. As we get deeper into the village, you can smell the freshness of the country as we delve into the wilderness. We drive up to the cocoa fields where we cannot drive any further. From here we follow the trail until we start heading uphill to the ridge of El Tucuche. This leg is the toughest, but when we reach to the top of the ridge, the balance of the trek, though uphill is quite good as the trail is not steep whatsoever. This trek to the summit which is 3,072 feet would take as long as 3 hours to accomplish.

Hear of the history of Maracas St. Joseph.

Listen to the interesting meaning of "El Tucuche" and how it got its name.

Admire the different types of flora as we trek on higher to the summit.

Astounding views of the villages around the mountain as well as the Caribbean Sea as we approach the top.

On the summit, a fantastic view of "Las Cuevas Beach" and other coastal beaches, together with classic views of the entire Central Plains, the Southern Range, the Eastern part of Trinidad.

Even if the weather does not permit, the clouds that may surround us also offers a magical feel one must experience.

Duration of tour: 6 hours.

The other route to the summit of El Tucuche (from Hobal Trace) which is more difficult can also be arranged by demand.

(19) THE CLASSIC BRUTAL CHALLENGE.

This type of hike is for the totally fit and hard core trekker. Once this hike starts, there is simply no turning back whatsoever. The perfect circuit hike where we start from Hobal Trace, Maracas St. Joseph and conclude right where we’ve started, but coming back from a totally different route. We will be totally lost in nature all around for most of the way with a break at Maracas Bay, and then its back to the wilderness where the last leg of this trek is certainly the most challenging up the gruesome "Loango Hill". Definitely a "BRUTAL".

From Hobal Trace, we start the trek immediately by heading uphill from the very start.

Constant uphill with little flat spots along the way, especially midway where uphill becomes extremely steep where we have to get down in all fours.

Once on top, the uphill then becomes easier all the way to the top.

From the top, we head downhill the other side to the other peak of El Tucuche.

From that second peak, we head downhill until we reach half way to Maracas Bay; then it is more trekking downhill for about an hour and a half until we reach Maracas Bay.

After a break at the bay, time for the difficult leg; the great "Loango Hill" where the steepness is constant all the way to the top which can take as long as (1) hour to reach.

The last leg is downhill and around the face of the mountain until we reach the road; then it’s downhill until we reach Hobal Trace when at last we see our vehicles. Mission accomplished.

Duration of tour: 8 hours.

(20) THE ULTIMATE HIKE OF HIKES (HIKATHON).

The equivalent of the well known marathon, the hike from the North-Eastern tip of Trinidad, "Matelot Village", we depart from this quiet fishing village and trek all the way along the coast for the next (21) miles where we will be passing through pristine and untouched forests and totally secluded beaches unknown by many until we reach the Spring Bridge in the village of "Blanchisseuse".

A three hour drive from Port of Spain to Matelot Village, so it is highly recommended that we depart for this journey at 4 am SHARP.

By 7:30 am, we should for the latest depart from Matelot. After (3) hours of trekking, we reach to the first coastal beach and river of "Madamas", surroundings, quite breathtaking I must say.

A further hour and a half and we reach the second bay of "Grand Tacarib" which is the longest of the coastal bays. Another lovely bay.

Another (45) minute trek and we reach "Petit Tacarib" beach which is also naturally lovely. In the middle of total isolation, there are a number of cabanas that at some time, you may be interested in spending a week-end.

Another hour and a half, we approach "Murphy’s Bay" which is also scenic indeed.

Just (10) more minutes in the forest and we’re at the last coastal beach of "Paria" where we can relax a bit and get ourselves mentally prepared for the final (2) hours trek to Blanchisseuse.

On the Spring Bridge, our transport patiently await our arrival with a well deserved bar and eats.

Duration of tour: 12 hours.

(21) MOUNT TAMANA (CAVE AND BAT EXPERIENCE).

At long last, hiking in the Central Range. We will be venturing up the tallest point in Central Trinidad, "Mount Tamana", home of the world’s second largest "Bat" population in the caves situated almost to the top of the hill. But first, before we venture into the cave, we head onto the top where astonishing views of the plains and the breathtaking Northern Range is just before our very eyes. After spending some time at the top, the fun begins.

Hear of the history of the Churchill Roosevelt Highway, Wallerfield, Valencia, Guaico.

A bit of history of the Central Range.

A lovely trek uphill Mount Tamana for about (45) minutes where the summit is a table top, meaning that once on top, it will take another (20) minutes to reach the other side of the mountain.

At the entrance to the cave, because of the entrance being very narrow, one has to first sit, angle yourself to the right and wiggle yourself all the way inside. Once in, the cave is very long and standing room is very affordable.

Armed with flashlights, take in the constant fluttering and high pitching sounds of the bats in their habitat. Do not fear as to if they will bite; not at all, for they are both insect and fruit eating bats.

After we have fun inside the cave, to get out, at the exit on the other side of the cave, a harness will have to be attached around you, as we will be about (15) feet down in the cave and a team will have to pull each of us out. Quite an adventure isn’t it?

Duration of tour: 8 hours.

(22) OROPOUCHE OR CUMACA OIL BIRD CAVE.

In the big village of Valencia, we veer North-East as though we are heading to Toco, but at the Cumaca Road, we turn left and drive in. We pass the bridge leading to Turure River and proceed for another (6) miles up terrible road, (4 wheelers are highly recommended) until we reach to the point where the hike begins. Despite the state of the road, the forest all around us is very infectious. This village of Cumaca is considered the village with the highest precipitation of rainfall in Trinidad and Tobago.

A lovely trail awaits us and we follow such all the way until in the middle of nowhere, an abandoned house is in our way.

As we round this house, we start heading downhill until we reach on flat ground and we proceed until we come smack to the entrance to the cave. Duration of this trek one way is about an hour and a half.

As we look inside the dark cave, the distinct sound of the eerie coarse sound of the oilbird is heard. Once you are not familiar with that sound, a lot of people are really skeptical in venturing into the cave, but be assured, these birds are harmless.

Torch lights are strongly recommended as this cave inside is very dark and we will also be walking through river water all the way inside, and as there are rocks in the way, lights are a must.

Well inside, these nocturnal birds cries becomes deafening as they flutter all round the cave.

After we reach back to our cars, a beautiful river pool is there for a swim if desired.

Duration of tour: 8 hours.

(23) DOUBLE RIVERS WATERFALL.

In the very remote village of Brasso Seco, neatly situated deep into the hills on the Arima/Blanchisseuse Road, as we head further into the forest via vehicle from the main road, one cannot help but be amazed that there are so many people living in this village "Behind God’s Back". But life here is simple and very laid back. As we approach the Roman Catholic Church right under the beautiful "Mount Bleu Hill", here we park and the adventure begins.

Hear of the history of Arima and the Arima/Blanchisseuse Road.

A short bit of history of Asa Wright Nature Centre.

History of Brasso Seco Village.

A beautiful hour and a half trek on flat terrain all the way to the waterfall.

A beautiful shallow pool all the way under the falls for your enjoyment.

Duration of tour: 8 hours.

(24) SOMBASSON WATERFALLS.

Into the hills of the Arima/Blanchisseuse Road, as we approach "Lalaja Road", we veer right up this road and proceed all the way along true nature until we reach to a point where we park. On this road, when we start our trek, astounding views of the Central Plains, a magnificent view of Mount Tamana, the tallest peak in the Central Range, and the Western region of Trinidad. This is also a circuit hike where the trek to the waterfalls is along the Lalaja Road and the return trek is through a totally different path hereby affording the luxury of seeing more of our natural forests.

History of Arima and the Arima/Blanchisseuse Road.

Trekking to the waterfalls along Lalaja Road will take just under (2) hours one way along flat terrain until we take the last leg to the waterfalls where some hills we will have to trek.

Approaching the first falls "Lalaja Falls", to reach the gem of Sombasson Falls, a final uphill climb along the face of the hill where there is some erosion that will certainly require a great deal of caution from each trekker will be necessary.

A great falls is the result of this journey with a beautiful pool to soak your tired body.

The trek back to the car will be taken by a different route where the trail here is hillier as far as steepness is concerned, but the duration of this journey here is cut considerably. The duration from this route is about just over an hour.

Duration of tour: 8 hours.

(25) PARAMIN TREK TO PARAGRAN BEACH.

From the Gas Station on the Saddle Road, we begin our trek up Paramin Hill where strong French and Spanish heritage is still present. Astounding views of Port of Spain and environs are at your fingertips. As we almost reach the top, we veer from Paramin and head to Paragran village where fantastic views of the Caribbean Sea and the small islands stands majestically before you. Trek all the way to a great and lonely beach of Paragran where bathing is absolutely great.

History of Maraval and Paramin village.
History of the “Lady of Guadeloupe Catholic Church”.
History of the road leading to Paragran village.
History of the Caribbean Sea.
Great bathing at Paragran Beach.

Duration of tour: 8 hours.

(26) MATURA BASINS LOOP TREK.

Welcome to the beautiful village of Matura where the river here is very little known yet still is ranked among the best in Trinidad and Tobago as far as bathing is concerned. Great forests all around the river results in a great cross country trek. A beautiful pool lies smack in the middle of the course where a stop off for a well deserved swim is ideal.

Great trekking through the pine forest until we reach natural forest.
As we reach the river, upstream trekking begins. Shallow waters all the way until we reach a great pool, ideal for swimming.
